Remington’s Gym

Here’s a quick one from a shoot at Remington’s Gym in Calgary. This place is killer old skool. Hard core, no lulu-lumons, and way cool. You wanna bulk, this this the real deal. Perfect place for some fitness images. This being one of two shoot today, I’ve hardly looked at them yet, but here’s a quick peak.

RED – The Collection

One of the funnest things I can think of to do, is just head out and make images with a specific theme in mind. Not a photo walk, not just random snaps, but have an idea, and use lights, location and subjects to get what is in your mind, out. Last Thursday, my friend and I did just that. I asked her quite a while ago if she’d be interested in modeling for me, and she was down with it. We’ve planned this shoot for a while, and made sure we got everything just right. She rocked out the wardrobe, make up and styling (it was all her!) after I gave a bit of an idea, and painted in her mind what look I was going for. My mom trusted me with her 56 T-bird (a way cool car to cruise in and it even carried all the lighting and camera gear in the trunk! We drove it and no other vehicle from location to location!!) and the weather worked out for us. The wind made it a bit interesting toward the end of the day, but no studio lights were lost. The worse part was when we’d be all set up, I’d lay on the road, and then like kids playing hockey on the street, “car!” Move the lights, stand and wave and not try not to be suspicious. (the passing farmers smiled, and scowled) Set up again, and give it another shot. This happened way more than I thought it would, but who cares, we were having fun!

I’m very happy with the way the images turned out. 9 hours, 5 lights, 3 locations and 305 photos later, I’ve reproduced what’s been floating in my brain for a long time. Feels good!

Post processing was very minimal, and involved a bit of cropping on some images, and the first 10 sliders in lightroom. These images took a total of about 1/2 on the mac to be ready for viewing. Taking the time (and sometimes it seems like a lot of time) to get it right on camera, pays of huge once the set is said and gone. Some of the lighting set ups were over an hour before we started shooting “real” frames.

When you hang out at a skate park…

…sometimes good things can happen.

In Fernie right now, relaxing with the family, and I figured I might as well try something with my camera while the kids were asleep. Packed up the speed lights and my wide angle lenses and go. I ended up meeting an incredibly talent rider who was down with a photo-shoot. Now, here’s what’s mad; his bike has no brakes, and no chain! Everything is about balance, momentum and making those two do exactly what you want them to. Amazing to watch, and way fun to shoot.

Now, shooting with my canon speedlights proved to be more difficult than I thought it would be for action photography. I had to reposition the lights several times to get them to hit the subject at the right point during his flight. Then, timing needs to be just so. I kept thinking how much easier it would be if I had my studio lights with the 36″ X 48″ soft boxes on them. Lots of light in a wide beam to catch the action. But, with a little fiddling, I was able to get the little light beam from the flash to go where I wanted it to.

Are we human, or are we dancer?

Had a great time yesterday shooting a dancer. She’s a friend that I’ve known for years, who’s living in Vancouver right now. I sent her a message to see if she’d be interested in modelling sometime, and sure enough she was actually in town. We made some hasty plans and had a blast. I’ve had these shots at these locations in my mind for a while, and it was great to get out and give them a try. This shoot was inspired by The Killers song, “are we human, or are we dancers”. All lighting was done with one Canon 580EXII and two 430EXII fired with pocket wizards. Cranking up to 1/4000th to tone down the ambient and skill maintain 2.8. Love those little PWs!

The Photo Booth

So, I’ve been dying for a chance to bust out the photo booth. I was asked to shoot a wedding party for my mother in law (wedding was in Phoenix) and I asked her if I could set up the PB. She agreed and it was a smash. This might just be the funnest shooting I’ve ever done. The guests were great, and after a few drinks, they got crazier and crazier. Photo Booth ROCKS! Mad Props to the excellent staff of the Flight Deck in Calgary, who actually let me set up a mini studio in their bar, and were very accommodating! You guys rock!

Newborn Photography

I had my first newborn session recently also. It’s neat to shoot a maternity session and a newborn session so close together. There’s an excitement about both of them, and it’s almost the same, yet it’s still very different. This sweet little girl was around 2 weeks old for the session and couldn’t be any cuter.

Maternity Session

I did my first Maternity session a few weeks ago. I’m a huge fan of babies, I’ve always loved them. There is something so special about the season of life, when you’re preparing to have your baby. I’ve been blessed to have 3 wonderful children, and while it may not be the norm, my wife and I have really enjoyed the wonderful times that we were with child. To capture some of that special time on film (okay technically not film, but it just sounds better) is a real honor, and a special experience.
